what does a scaled score equate to for the raw score on the npte

  1. Hullo anybody! Moronic question. If i scores say 75 right answers out of 100 what would be one's score on that particular CLEP exam?
  2. It is not moronic. What is moronic is the ETS'southward scoring organisation. No, a 75% will not, except by coincidence, equate to a 75 on the test.

Each test is "normed" confronting a group of people who've taken a class in that subject field. Your raw score is compared to theirs. So, your score is translated into a CLEP score on a xx-80 calibration, "normed" around 50 every bit the 50th percentile. (Information technology's assinine; they should just study percentiles, only they don't.)

What's really goofy is that scores don't compare from examination-to-test. A 45 on American Government isn't necessarily the same as one on Economics. (There is no telling which was the higher, either in raw score or in percentile.) However, a 50 is a 50 is a 50. (They're equal in percentile, only no necessarily in percentage.)

Confused? Expert, then ETS has met its goal. It obscures its practices in a whole lot of mumbo-jumbo, matched with inane, cocky-confirming inquiry. And then it wraps information technology all up in sales pitches that demean its so-called not-turn a profit status. (Oh, it makes a turn a profit all right, and is constantly on the make for more than.)

This is from their CLEP site:

    Parents
Discover how a CLEP "scholarship" tin save your family coin and shorten your child'south path to a college caste.

It, forth with the Saturday, GRE, GMAT, Praxis, and many others, is a muddied, money-grubbing concern. One that allowed me to accept two bachelor'south degrees from get-go-to-finish in 21 months before I was even 21 years quondam. If you can't get 30, 60, or fifty-fifty more credits my taking this junk, you just aren't trying.

  3. And further more than, if I may add to Rich's rant, the standards for performance are changed from fourth dimension to time, so a operation that might accept placed ane in the 50th percentile on a given test ten years ago might put that person in the 60th percentile now.

This seems to me a fleck like reducing the length of rulers by 10%, and and so announcing that children are almost 10% taller than they used to be.

  4. Of form, I meant "asinine."
  5. I'm even so confused. Are you telling me that there is no certain style of knowing what my CLEP score would be (on their 20-fourscore scale) if I were to go 75 out of 100 right answers?
  6. They take fifty-fifty changed the scoring afterward the fact. I took the GRE many moons ago, and years later I received a letter of the alphabet from ETS proverb that they were dropping one question from the one-time test that I had written (because they had belatedly discovered that the question was cryptic or ill-posed in some way). The letter went on to say that they were readjusting anybody's scores to fit their curve, and re-reporting the scores to all the institutions they had previously reported them to! This was entirely irrelevant to me since I had already graduated (afterward half-dozen years). Only my stance of ETS went from a mediocre ane out of ten to a firm zero. What a agglomeration of utterly worthless bureaucrats.
  7. The dominion of thumb is if you are scoring around lxxx% on the practise tests, yous will go an 'A' every time. I first saw this on Lawrie's website and afterwards xx-some odd CLEP, DSST, and ECE tests, I agree. Some schools form all CLEP tests as pass/fail and some assign letter grades.

This dominion of pollex worked well for me except for the much discussed American Government CLEP (which I scored well on, simply Excelsior has a very high cutoff score for an 'A').

And so, if you lot have a await at Excelsior's cutoffs, your 75% should be somewhere around them.

  8. Incidentally, in tomorrow's Education Life supplement to the New York Times, there is a long commodity near Sat and Human action. The interesting betoken made is that SAT is becoming like to ACT (in terms of trying to measure competence rather than aptitude). I took neither the Saturday nor the ACT, so I can't comment on them. But the article did ostend my extremely low opinion of ETS and its associates (College Lath, etc.).
  9. The ACT measures competence? I hardly attended high school afterwards my sophmore year (I took the GED so went to work), yet I still scored in the 99th percentile on that exam. I e'er thought it tested more than aptitude than competence. So again, let's consider the four parts of the exam. Math - about freshman level. English - Probably the same, for me this was the hardest part, patently ;) . Science Principles - simple, simple, simple. Reading comprehension - even more and so, I attained a perfect score by understanding that Jack and Jill were walking upwardly an inclined gradient. What level of competence is being measured?

Of course, this is probably your bespeak.

This isn't really that goofy at all. They (the testing agencies) are in essence grading on a bend. If the curve is steep betwixt an A and a C on a certain subject, then the relative scores are obviously not going to compare well, except for the fifty percentile which is self divers. BTW, Dantes has released their equation that details how they equate raw scores, I would believe that CLEP scores are equated in a similar style. If CLEP has not done so, it is indeed a shame, since it has nothing to practice with the validity of the procedure. Not at all. The tests modify every bit does the knowledge being tested and the norming (the cheers effect :D ) of the tests. These tests are designed to judge the knowledge gained though seat-time and compare this against someone who wants to challenge that their self directed knowledge is on par. In other words, if they release a new test, and the operation of the control group raises or lowers, then the challengers functioning is measured by the same 'ruler' as the control grouping. It is hard to say anything except that you lot will likely pass, and if it is graded receive an A or B grade.

    Tony

  10. So I guess my overall score would depend on the grading curve. There are pros and cons to that.
