5 Revolutionary War Videos for Kids

5 Revolutionary War Videos for Kids

Browsing YouTube for the perfect Revolutionary War video can be a timesuck. Many history videos for kids seem promising at first. However, after watching for a few minutes you may notice a biased point of view or a swear word. And then it's back to square one.

One of my goals with this website is to save teachers time, so I am compiling lists of excellent kid-friendly history videos. After hours of watching YouTube videos, here are my 5 top videos for teaching students about the Revolutionary War.

The following videos are factual, high-quality, appropriate, and fun. Enjoy!

The Revolutionary War Animated Map by American Battlefield Trust

  • American Battlefield Trust's detailed overview of the Revolutionary War covering major events from Lexington to the end of the war

  • 19 minutes

  • My Rating: age 10+

  • Notes: This video is so excellent that I created a lesson around it. Read the lesson and download the Revolutionary War timeline sort.

Liberty's Kids Episodes

  • An animated series about fictional kids who experience the major events of the American Revolution

  • 23 minute episodes (40 episodes in all covering events from The Boston Tea Party to the creation of the Constitution)

  • My Rating: age 8+ (perfect for upper elementary)

  • Notes: My favorite episodes are 101- The Boston Tea Party, 106-The Shot Heard Round the World, and 136-Yorktown.

  • The main bummer? The episodes are interrupted by advertisements, but you can solve this by buying the episodes from iTunes.

Now or Never: The Yorktown Campaign

Now or Never: The Yorktown Campaign

  • Mountvernon.org's playlist of 10 animated videos about the Yorktown Campaign (the events leading to the British surrendering at Yorktown)

  • 20 minutes in all (each video is a few minutes long)

  • My rating: age 10+ (upper elementary and up)

  • Notes: The best part? These videos come with student worksheets (including different versions for upper elementary and middle school).

Paul Revere and the American Revolution by History Channel

  • History Channel's quick biography of Paul Revere. Also includes his role in the American Revolution.

  • 3 minutes

  • My Rating: age 10+

  • Notes: Check out this Paul Revere lesson for 7th and 8th graders from The Gilder Lehrman Institute.

Boston Massacre: A Memestory by MrBettsClass

  • In this last video, teacher Mr. Bett's gives a sarcastic explanation of the Boston Massacre using memes (funny images and videos that your students have probably seen on the internet)

  • 5 minutes

  • My Rating: age 10+

  • Notes: This video is HILARIOUS! This would be a fun way to review or introduce the Boston Massacre.

More Resources for Teaching about the Revolutionary War

Revolutionary War videos can be a fun and effective way for kids to learn about US History, but they are just one piece of the instructional puzzle. You may also be interested in a free Revolutionary War timeline or Revolutionary War primary sources.

Additionally, if you want to save yourself precious prep time, check out my 3 week unit about the Revolutionary War. My favorite part is the 5 day simulation where students get to join the Continental Army as a soldier, spy, or officer.

Hundreds of teachers have told me how much they love this unit. So, what are you waiting for?

If you need help teaching about the events leading to the American Revolution, I have developed a unit for that too! This Declaration of Independence Unit will enrage your students (in a good way) as they experience "taxation without representation". Check it out!
